So for you others who's still able to learn;
Our straw bale home was the first legal permitted straw bale home made in the traditional way with earth plaster straight on the straw bales. We got the permit easy as it was a renovation of a 130 year old barn. The barn was placed very poorly; at the bottom of a very large watershed (hill), which means that every spring it gets flooded. This meant that we had to deal with fixing someone else's problem (location) rather than building how I recommend and would have preferred: on columns; off the ground.
I did not want to poor a concrete sub-floor, and had no way to insulate the bottom of the house from rising, or potentially downwards (perhaps broken water pipe) flowing water. We also wanted a floor which could accumulate heat from the sun+ we wanted floor heating, which ruled out a wooden floor. ...And we couldn't afford (+ it wasn't on the market in '06) the recycled glass insulation. We used 4L canning jars from the local school to function as capillary breaking layer while supplying a 24 cm space with still standing air which provides some degree of insulation.
On top of the jars we needed something which insulates, would be able to disseminate point loads, would be stable enough to make an earthen floor on top. In addition we couldn't risk some material which could potentially rot due to moist air conditions between the glass jars. So we chose Styrofoam (polystyrene); made in a factory 5 km from us.
I have never advocated the use of Styrofoam, but frequently said that I find it's among the 'neutral' insulation materials available, when looking at toxicity and embodied energy. I don't have any fears of the effect on our indoor climate, as it will be covered with about 5 cm of earthen floor (same as I don't have a fear of smell from tires in an ES). Lately I have learned more about Styrofoam, and realized it is more on the negative list than on the neutral. However I can't say I wouldn't do it again; I simply can't think of another material to use for the given design.
Now, Hlad [thou who knows everything], I welcome your pro-active suggestion for a better solution?
I also hope that you trying to publicly sticking a knife in my back isn't due to the fact that you were upset that we don't allow for just anyone you talk to, to come and build on our land, which was the last we saw of you (when your friend had been told that he couldn't come and do that with 2 days warning!)

,ale nemám rád Maxovu politiku(byznys přístup)...,
